Family History

William Carswell, the premier subject of this memorial, was part of a large family one of whom was a local minister of religion. The memorial is a three section edifice, the left section of which displays the subject’s details.

William was the third generation of his family to farm at Duncarnock. It should be noted the difference in the spelling of Duncarnock as displayed on the stone. Mistakes occurred even on such important objects.

Duncarnock Farm situated some two miles west of Newton Mearns was fifty acres in extent and bounded on its eastern edge by the Glanderston Dam. On the death of his father William worked the farm on behalf of his mother, as all of his brothers, with one exception, chose careers outside farming. His four sisters however, while still unmarried, remained at home adding to his responsibilities.

William aged thirty years, married Jessie Stevens from nearby Eaglesham. The marriage took place in 1882. Shortly after the marriage the couple left Duncarnock and set up home in nearby Craigton Farm, where they were to raise a family of five children. Their family consisted of Janet (b.1884), Robert (b.1887), William (b.1888), Isabella (b. 1891) and James (b. 1893).

Unfortunately none of the children was to enjoy the company of their father for long, as William had developed pleura-pneumonia and was to die at the comparatively young age of forty-five years in 1895, leaving his wife with the burden of running the farm. This responsibility appeared to be too much for Jessie Carswell as the family left the farm soon afterwards and Craigton was absorbed into the surrounding farms.

Jessie Carswell did not leave the parish and was to survive another fifty-six years succumbing to old age on 31st July, 1951 aged ninety years.
