Family History

Monuments Z01, Z02 and Z03 commemorate the Polloks of Fa’side, as distinct from the Polloks of Titwood who are commemorated on monuments Z04, Z05 and Z06. Both families share a common ancestor in Allan Pollok of Craigton who married Margaret Warnock in 1666 and died c.1696.

These imposing memorials on the south-west wall of the Kirkyard have deteriorated badly, making it difficult for the recorder to read the inscriptions. Confirmation of the dates was obtained by reference to the recordings made for the Scottish Genealogy Society in 1969.

Allan Pollok of Fa’side died on 13th September 1852 aged seventy–seven, and his wife Jean Coats Pollok died in 1855, aged eighty years.

Allan Pollok, the son of Thomas Pollok and Janet Wilson, was born on 16th November 1775 and christened in Mearns three days later. On February 27th 1803 he married Jean Coats in East Kilbride. The elder brother of John and Arthur Pollok, (cf. monument Z02), his occupation is listed variously as farmer and proprietor and at the time of the 1851 census his residence was listed as Todhillbank. The name of this mansion on Capelrig Road has since been abbreviated to Todhill.

His son, Allan, married his cousin Margaret, the daughter of Arthur Pollok and Barbara Thomson (cf. monument Z02), on 20th August 1839. The family fortune acquired by this marriage through Margaret’s father (Arthur Pollok of Pollok, Gilmour & Co.) was dissipated largely due to Allan’s ambitious plans to modernize farming practices in properties he acquired in Ireland.

As is obvious this monument and the adjacent monuments which were once enclosed by a railing are in a state of poor repair. In former times and within living memory the church beadle was paid a small emolument to keep the memorials in pristine condition.
