Family History

George Watson, a joiner from Cathcart, courted and wed local Mearns lass Janet Renfrew. Janet had come from farming families based for the greater part at Barrance and Mainshouse Farms on the eastern extremity of the parish. Possibly through his marriage to Janet, George took tenancy of a farm at Wellmeadow. This farm was by any standards very small, being only ten acres in extent, so George continued to ply his trade as joiner to enable the well being of his ever growing family.

Seven children were produced by this couple during their residence at Wellmeadow Farm, four sons and three daughters. This period of their life, which with their young family should have been a happy time for all, was to be marred by the early deaths of three of the children. First to die was daughter Janet aged only three years. The daughter who replaced her, also named Janet, died at sixteen years of age having wasted away for six months prior to her death. Son George followed his sister to the grave within a year having contracted a virus infection which caused an inflammation of his brain.

Perhaps these losses added to the impulse to move, as within a short period the remaining family had left Wellmeadow and settled at Maidenhill Farm. Maidenhill, a farm of fifty acres, was at the opposite end of the parish from their previous dwelling being to the south of Fa’side on the Mearns Road.

Gradually, with age taking its toll, George passed the farm over to his son James who by this time had a wife and family of his own to support. George died aged eighty-four years in 1892 to be followed within a year by his wife Janet aged seventy-nine years.

This memorial appears to replace the original stone, erected on the instructions of son Robert, then residing in London.
