Family History

This monument in the shape of an open book is to be found within an enclosure near to the southern outer wall of the Mearns kirkyard. It shares the space apparently occupied by the family Telfer (see Monument S16), but no connection has been established between these parties.

The memorial has been donated by colleagues of the deceased John Robertson from an unnamed Masonic Lodge of which Mr Robertson appears to have been a member. The plaque displays appropriate Masonic symbols.

Nothing is known as to who or where John Robertson is or comes from, other than that he did not die in the parish. Where he is buried in the kirkyard, if at all, has also not been established. The plaque may have been intended purely as a commemorative gesture by his friends, as no grave other than this one carries this surname.
