WILLIAM MARSHALL
WHO DIED FEB 12TH 1879
AGED 58 YEARS
Family History
This plain and simple stone marks the resting place of William Marshall, a native of Stonehouse in Lanarkshire, who died in the village of Newton in Mearns Parish on 13th February, 1879. The date shown on the stone indicates the date of death as the 12th February but the death certificate gives it a day later. It is interesting to examine the primitive lettering on this stone which indicates quite clearly that skilled stone engravers were in short supply in the parish.
Employed as a printfield worker, William was shown to have died at age fifty-eight years of senile decay. No doubt in modern times he would have been diagnosed with some recognisable form of senility.
He married Mary Govan in Stonehouse on 9th January 1851 and it is not known when the couple moved to Mearns. His death was reported by his son John.
