Family History
The premier monument occupying this position in the kirkyard belongs to the Wallace family. The monument is made of local stone and is table shaped in design.
The small marble plaque placed at the foot of the Wallace stone has no apparent connection with the monument S12. See Monument S12A
The Wallace family enumerated on this stone do not appear to have been native to the Mearns. George Wallace Snr., the patriarch of this clan, married his wife Agnes Gardner in Paisley on 20th April, 1805. The couple had three children in total, George Jun. (b.1805 in Paisley), Margaret (b.1814 in Lochwinnoch) and Jane (b.1816 in Lochwinnoch). George Wallace Sen and George Wallace Jun. were both bleachers to trade. None of George Wallace Jnr’s. family are listed as having been born in Scotland.
It may be that the family had connections with the Netherplace Works where the company of Wallace & Co. operated in the early and mid 19th Century. This connection has not been established as yet.
