Monument Inscription
ERECTED
BY
WILLIAM ANDREW
Family History
This substantial stone appears to have been erected by the person named thereon in preparation for his own demise, but for a reason presently unclear, he was not to have his wishes met. Obviously a man of substance by the design and size of memorial he had erected, his identity disappears into the mists of time owing to the scarcity of information thereon.
It may also be that a burial did take place but his dependents were either not in a position to pay, or unwilling to have an inscription added to the stone.
In an effort to identify William Andrew it was discovered that the name was very common across many areas of North and Central Ayrshire in the period involved namely 19th Century. A total of eight William Andrews have been identified within the parish of Mearns during this same period.
Two families with surname Andrew were farmers in the parish, but no direct connection has been made between them and William Andrew.
