Family History
This memorial initially commemorates the death of Thomas Prentice and his spouse Isabella Watson. This couple were not native to Mearns but came from the adjoining parish of Eaglesham.
James Prentice, their son, however, did settle in Mearns, taking stewardship of the farm at Corselet. Corselet Farm a holding of some forty-five acres of north facing land was situated at the bottom of the hill leading out of the village of Newton on the road towards Barrhead. Being in the near vicinity of Newton the farmer would have a ready market for his products, particularly milk and butter. The printworks at Netherplace, with its large workforce, was another customer base which may have been exploited by farmers in this area.
Marrying Janet Watt at Eaglesham on 5th June 1868 brought James the responsibility of breadwinner for the family that was to emerge from this union. Six children, only one of which was a boy, were added to the family at Corselet Farm in due time. This lad, named Thomas, after his paternal grandfather, was pre-destined to take over the running of the farm on the death of his father.
His mother survived another sixteen years after her husband’s death passing away aged seventy-eight years.
