Family History

This very old stone is typical in design of stones in the times covered by the dates shown on its face.

Flat stones of local quarried whinstone with little or no decoration appended were usually shown to have been inscribed by a mason or someone with some skill in this art. In this case the opposite appears to be the case, as the lettering on the face of the stone is of a very primitive and unskilled nature, indicating the source as being close to the interred.

The first set of initials signifies a couple J W and A S with the date 1674. The second inscription shows the names John Wilson and Barbara Pollok with the date 1766. It may be that the first named J W was the father or grandfather of the second John Wilson.

Whilst no positive identification has been found as to the origins of these persons their memorial is one of the oldest monuments in the kirkyard.

It may be of interest to the reader that two persons carrying the surname Wilson are listed as residents in the Mearns area in 1494. These persons had refused to pay dues to the local mayor and coroner William Cunningham of Craigend. In lieu of these debts Lyon Wilson had a pot seized while William Wilson lost a sheet.
