Monument Inscription
ERECTED BY
JAMES MEIKLE
IN MEMORY OF HIS SON
WILLIAM,
WHO DIED 21ST JANY 1892, AGED 20 1/2 YEARS
Family History
This simple upright stone marks the last resting place of a local shoemaker’s son.
William Meikle had hardly entered adulthood when he succumbed to pneumonia and died aged twenty years. William was born to James Meikle and his wife Mary McNeilage.
The family appear to have lived in the small hamlet, next to the Mearns Kirk, that was made up of single storey cottages, many covered by thatched roofs.
William appears to have achieved a good standard of education, being employed in the capacity of clerk. Born in the Mearns in 1871 he would have attended Mearns Public School.
Surprisingly no other members of the family are listed on the memorial, which might suggest they left the area.
