Family History

This fine granite monument was erected by Robert Allison in memory of his parents, James Allison and Margaret Ritchie who had eight children - Robert, Jean, Agnes, Margaret, James, William, Janet and Elizabeth. All of these lived to adulthood and two of them, William and Janet lived to the age of ninety-one. Janet survived until 1917.

James and Margaret’s second son James is also commemorated here. Robert’s own name and that of his wife and their children were later recorded on the memorial.

Robert married Mary Ann Hopkins from Monkton in Ayrshire in 1862. The marriage for some reason took place not in either of the parties’ home parishes but in Hutchesontown in Glasgow. Mary Ann who died in 1912 was to outlive all her children. Four died in infancy and two died before reaching the age of eleven years. Only two survived till adulthood; Margaret Ritchie Allison died at the age of twenty-one and a ‘replacement’ Robert at thirty-six years.

When James Allison died in 1865, he left substantial property. The farm at Malletsheugh and other property was left to his eldest son. The second son surviving at the time of his father’s death (William) inherited Malletsheugh Inn and several neighbouring houses. There is no valuation from this date of the ‘other property’ in Mearns which went with the farm. However, on Robert’s death in 1888 this property provided a rental of £134 per annum.

The farm at Malletsheugh occupied by the Allison family for over one hundred years carried the title of Mid Malletsheugh. At one period there were three farms all carrying the name Malletsheugh as well as the hamlet of Malletsheugh.
