Family History
This memorial stone is one of the few 18th Century stones still to be found in the kirkyard. The inscription has over the years suffered the ravages of weather and wear to virtual obliteration. The numbers 1764 are visible, but whether relating to the original inscription or added at a later date is unknown. The lettering appears contemporary with the times indicated.
It is interesting to be aware that, should this date be accurate, the person interred in this lair would have been alive during the time of the Jacobite Uprising in Scotland with all of its attendant upheaval. Apparently there was little support for the Jacobites in the Mearns in common with other parts of the Lowlands of Scotland.
