Family History
This stone gives the appearance of having been commissioned and erected by the first named person on the inscription namely William Pollok. The lack of detail as to the identity of his children and dates of birth or death is another pointer to indicate a premature placement.
He would however have reason to erect a memorial as it shows such detail when indicating the death of his mother Ann Millar in 1847.
It may have been, as often was the case that at the time of his mother’s death William was not in a position to afford such a remembrance. The stone displays the date 1850 on its portico, as being the date of erection.
Peculiarly he does not commemorate his father Robert Pollok, nor in due passage of time have further details been added of other family members. A lengthy verse appended to the bottom half of the stone restricts the space available for any additional inscription.
Little if anything is known of this Pollok family, one of many such to be found at that time living in the Mearns and surrounding districts.
