Family History
This memorial stone stands alongside that of the grave of John Armour who was responsible for its erection. The family to which John belonged was not native to the Mearns, but hailed from Kilmarnock. None of the persons named on this stone, namely John’s parents and siblings, was registered as having died in the Mearns Parish. It appears the stone may have been raised purely as a memorial and commemoration of the people enumerated on it, and they were buried elsewhere.
John Armour, the donor, was known to be a god-fearing man holding very strong religious convictions, and may have been granted permission by the Kirk Session to erect such an epitaph.
The stone itself appears to have been broken at its base and re-erected concealing the bottom portion of the inscription.
