Family History

Little is known of the life and circumstances of John Stewart, other than he was at one time a grocer in Gorbals, and that he and his wife, Barbara Pollok, had children.

The surname Pollok is commonly found in Mearns: the surname Stewart perhaps less frequently. The writer concludes therefore that Barbara Stewart (née Pollok) was likely to have been native to Mearns and that her husband John was possibly not.

John Stewart may have been an uncle by marriage of John and Arthur Pollok (cf. monument Z02) who, before they entered into partnership with Allan Gilmour to found Pollok Gilmour & Co., served an apprenticeship with their uncle, a grocer in Glasgow.

Further research may prove or disprove this possibility.
