Family History
The first named on this monument John Boyd was the father-in-law of a local businessman and landowner William Mather. His daughter Annabella Hannah Boyd had married William Mather in 1867.
John Boyd had been a writer, known in modern terms as a lawyer, in Glasgow when he met and married a Mearns girl named Jeanie Watson. The marriage took place in Mearns Parish on 19th September 1841. Two days after the event it was registered in Glasgow in the parish to which John belonged. This was not an unusual practice.
It appears that John had taken to living with his daughter and her husband at Kirkhill House, Mearns which their son-in-law owned. Jeanie his wife had died in 1872, some eleven years before her spouse, so no doubt he had been looked after by his daughter at Kirkhill during his later years.
It is interesting to note that two of his daughter’s children, Jeanie and Elizabeth Mather, were to be buried alongside their grandparents in this plot in later years. This would no doubt be caused by the other Mather family graves in the kirkyard being full to capacity with other family members (see Monuments Z 31 and Z 32).
