Family History

Situated adjacent to the original Session House at the entrance to the Mearns Kirkyard and enclosed by a railing are monuments A06 and A07 together with memorial A08 which bears no inscription. These monuments commemorate members of the family of John Hamilton (1768-1849) of Rogerton, East Kilbride, and Susan Dunlop (1780 – 1856).

This sandstone memorial to Susan Hamilton (1821-1884), one of seven daughters born to John Hamilton and Susan Dunlop, shows evidence of erosion. Susan was a ‘replacement’ daughter for the Hamiltons whose second child, born in 1808, had also been named Susan.

In chronological order the sisters were Elizabeth (b.22.02.1805), Susan (b.23.07.1808), Isabella (b.29.05.1810), Mary (b.8.07.1811), a ‘replacement’ Elizabeth (b.2.10.1816), Jean (b.7.04.1818) and Susan (b.9.04.1821) whose name is inscribed on this monument.

Isabella married Adam Pearson, a West Indies merchant, Mary was the second wife of John Howie of Hazelden commemorated in monument F03 and Elizabeth (b.1816) married the Rev. William Carrick, minister of East Kilbride (Old) Parish Church from 1843 until 1869.
