Family History

Robert Barr, the first name on this memorial, was a farmer by birth and occupation and was to marry a farmer’s daughter named Margaret Pollock. Whilst not known for certain, it is likely that he farmed at the southern extremity of the parish of Mearns in Sheildhill, situated on rough exposed moorland suitable only for grazing sheep and black cattle.

John’s father, also named John, had farmed before him, and wife Margaret’s parents were John Pollock, shown as a farmer/mason, and Elizabeth Harvie.

Robert and Margaret had only two children, both daughters, named Elizabeth and Margaret. Daughter Margaret born in the Mearns in 1819, was employed in the craft of dress-making, and had been living at Newtonhead before marrying James Reid, on 22nd July, 1855. The minister who married them was the Rev. Hugh Stirling and the witnesses were Robert Barr and Allan Galt. The couple set up home at Nether Broom on the bridegroom’s employer’s estate.

James Reid, the son of George Reid, cattle dealer, and Agnes Craig, was employed in the capacity of Land Steward. His employer was Allan Pollok of Broom Estate and James would have been responsible for the day-to-day running of the estate’s functions, in particular the agricultural interests. The couple’s first born child, a son named Robert after his maternal grandfather, was to survive for only three short months having been born with congenital spina-bifida. Another two sons are listed on this stone, James and another Robert.

James Jnr. is shown as marrying a Margaret Craig but no trace of this marriage can be found in official Scottish records.
