Family History

This monument commemorates the mother and son of the Rev. Mungo Reid, Minister of Mearns Parish Kirk from 1868 to 1908. Mungo Reid was born in Glasgow on 23rd March 1838, the second son of Mungo Reid and Jessie Heron. He was educated at the High School of Glasgow and the University of Glasgow where he graduated M.A. in 1859. Licensed by the Presbytery of Islay in 1863, he served as assistant minister in St Andrew’s Parish Church, Glasgow, and was ordained Minister in Lochgelly in 1865. He was awarded a Doctorate of Divinity in Chicago, USA in 1884.

He married Isabella Hamilton Pearson on 30th August 1887. They had two children, Eric Pearson Reid who survived only six months (19.2.1890 - 22.8.1890) and Ada Mary Reid who married Charles John Paton, the son of the Principal of the Church of Scotland College in Madras, on 10th February 1917.

Dr Reid was minister of Mearns Parish Kirk for forty years and was succeeded by the Rev. James Hutchison Cockburn in 1908.

The names of Jessie Heron, Dr Reid’s mother, and Eric Pearson Reid, his son, are inscribed on an inlay superimposed on the original sandstone monument. It seems probable that the original inscriptions had eroded and become illegible with the course of time.

The Rev. Dr Reid’s name is inscribed at the top of the original sandstone monument.
