Family History

This memorial stone is of a very old design. A flat stone intended to cover the area of the lair, it finds itself utilised as a paving slab on the path on the south side of the church.

Despite having been trodden on for over two hundred years the initials R G and J A are still very clear. Only guesses can be made as to likely identification of the persons commemorated but two very well known family groups in the Mearns community over many years were the Gilmours and Allisons.

Taking into account that Monument Q03 which lies immediately alongside this stone refers to a Robert Gilmour and Jean Allison as having been given the propriety of this lair, it is most likely that this is the identity of the persons whose initials appear on this stone.
