Family History
Walter, the son of James and Janet Rodger, was born in Mearns on December 17th 1855. His father was born in Mearns about 1818; his mother, Janet Mair, was born in Barrhead.
Walter, who like his father worked as a carter, married Rose Ann Oliver on July 14th 1893 in Mearns. Rose Ann was the daughter of Irish immigrants from County Antrim, Samuel and Rachel Oliver, who like many others moved from Ireland, attracted by the availability of work in the cloth processing works in the Mearns area.
Allan Rodger, whose name is inscribed on this monument with those of his parents, was born on January 2nd 1900 (possibly the first baby of the 20th century to be born in the Parish of Mearns). By the time of Allan’s birth, his father Walter had secured employment as a carter at Greenfield bleachfield.
Rose Ann, who was ten years younger than her husband Walter, died at the same age, seventy-four years, surviving him by ten years and ten days.
Walter’s brother, James Rodger, is commemorated on monument N14.
Greenfield bleachfield was situated near to the site presently occupied by St Cadoc’s Primary School on Crookfur Road. The remains of a lade which supplied the bleachfield can still be traced.
