Family History

This stone is without doubt one of the most interesting stones to be found in the entire kirkyard. The only one of its type it was probably also one of the oldest grave markers. This upright stone is seen to be worked on both front and back faces.

The front face displays a skull and crossbones on top of which is arrayed an assortment of trade tools which may relate to the work of a Wright or a Mason. To complete this design a substantial amount of deep carving has been required to the stone face, which may indicate the likelihood that it commemorates a stone mason.

The entire rear of the stone has been inscribed with the following primitive verse complete with spelling errors and imperfect lettering.

REMEMBER ALL THAT
COMES THIS ROOD
YOUR MEETING IT
WILL BE WITH GOOD
IF IT BE SWEET YOU
MAY BE SHURE THAT
CHRIST HAS BEEN
YOUR OPNING DOOR

One of the mysteries surrounding this stone is that despite the obvious hard work put into its creation, there is no indication as to whom the memorial is dedicated.
