Family History

This may have been a Stevenson family gravestone which John Williamson re-used. The editor of the pre-1855 recorded for the Scottish Genealogy Society in 1969 has written that the initials G.S. and J.S may be those of Gavin Steinsoune and his wife Jennet Syme in Mainhouse. These names together with those of their children Gavin, Robert and John Steinsoune are recorded in the Poll Tax record of 1695. It is possible therefore that John Williamson’s mother may have been a descendant of Gavin Steinsoune and Jennet Syme.

The date 1833 inscribed at the bottom of the inscription is given as 1873 in the pre-1855 recording.
