Family History

This simple yet proud stone stands as testament to the respect enjoyed by the deceased from his employer.
Daniel Sinclair a loyal, steadfast and long serving employee of William Mather, landowner and businessman of Kirkhill House, Mearns, by displaying such qualities had caused Mr Mather to erect this monument as a token of his respect and gratitude for the service provided by this erstwhile lowly employee over a very long time period.

Daniel Sinclair was perhaps one of an unusual breed of persons who appear to be content in their role and status in life, so much so that they often draw little attention. Nothing appears to have been known about this man’s past, even though he worked for the same employer for over fifty years. His exact age at time of death was not know, but he was about seventy years old. His parentage was unknown, and there is no indication where he originally came from.

Daniel never progressed to be other than a general labourer and never took himself a wife. He resided within the precincts of Kirkhill House, a mansion house to the north of the parish, and it was there that he died of natural causes on 30th April, 1911.
