Family History

This stone is typical in style of the time period found in this section of the kirkyard.
Made out of local stone in the form of a tablet it has been shaped on its upper edge in a heart shape which adds character to an otherwise unremarkable stone. It is inscribed with the initials J S and A A with the date 1792; no other mark appears on the stone.

The inscription is brief to the point of being of little use to those not privy to the identity of the persons commemorated. Again this style of inscription is not unusual for its period. Unfortunately the lack of information contained on the stone means that we cannot identify its owners.

Often such stones were erected prior to the demise of the proposed occupants as a means of staking their claims to a space within the kirkyard. This may be borne out by the date shown on the stone being the date of the purchase of the lair rather than the date of death. The initials would most likely relate to a man and wife.
