Family History

This monument is unusual insofar as it is inscribed both on the front and rear faces of the stone.

Since the memorial to Margaret Pollock refers to her long lasting and devoted service to her employer, it would indicate the great esteem this employer had for his servant. Such it was that he instructed the stone be raised as a tribute to this person.

Margaret Pollock was born in Mearns on 14th April, 1788 to parents John Pollock and Elizabeth Muir. Her father, employed as a wright, lived in the settlement of Kirkhill where he plied his craft. Wrights were important workers within a community being called upon to manufacture and repair all sorts of wooden machinery from carts to waterwheels.

The date at which Margaret married her husband James Hamilton is unrecorded, but the couple did not remain in the district as can be seen by the fact that she worked for an employer in Fairlie, Ayrshire for thirty-two years. Her husband’s skill as a stone mason was transferable and he would have found employment wherever they settled.

Reference is made on the stone to Margaret’s brothers and sisters being buried alongside her, but again no records have been found as to the identity of these persons.
The identities of the persons Browning mentioned on the stone are also unknown, but they are most probably relations to the Pollock family.

Whoever was responsible for the funding of this monument did ensure however that Margaret in due course of time was brought back from her place of death, namely Fairlie in Ayrshire, to be buried in her place of origin alongside her kinfolk.
