Family History

John and Bella Clues, obviously devoted and loving children to their parents, took the trouble and expense of raising this substantial monument to honour the memory of both their parents.

The departed persons, James and Mary Clues nee Lynch, had been residents of the Mearns parish all their lives including being married there in 1880.
James, whose father of the same name had been a coachman by occupation, perhaps through his father’s connections with the gentry, gained employment to train as and subsequently become a gardener, which trade he was to be follow all his life.

Living at 108 Main St, Newton Mearns, this family would have been in the heart of the community and widely known in the village. Their children were raised there and would have attended the local school where Mr Downie was headmaster at the time. The school which had been built in 1876 was situated on the Kilmarnock (now Ayr) Road within a few hundred yards of their home.

Mother of the family Mary Lynch, was to depart this life in 1925 some twelve years before her spouse, who on 26th March, 1937 aged seventy-eight years joined her in Mearns kirkyard.

This monument was obviously raised after the death of James Clues in 1937.
